Why this ground

He did not buy a retreat. He made one.

Terry L. Fossum made Sweetwater Ranch his own private Montana retreat. He could have bought ground anywhere. He chose this mountaintop — eighty acres above Gold Creek, minutes from public land and ringed by big, mostly-empty parcels — and shaped it into the place he wanted to stand on, building the Whiskey Ridge bunkhouse with his own hands.

He has also hosted veterans and first responders here, as a place to decompress. The land suited that use more than any other, and it shaped how the ranch was kept. It is a retreat for them still.

The man who chose it

A place made his own, to keep.

Privacy, self-reliance, and legacy — the owner's own values, written into eighty acres above Gold Creek.

Where the work gets done

A place that produces, and a place to get away from the crowds.

When the owner first walked the property, the realtor showing it asked a simple question: could he write his next book here. He could, and he did. The book that followed went on to become a #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller.

That is the measure of the place. It is quiet enough to think clearly and far enough out to keep the world at arm's length — the kind of ground a national reality-show winner comes to precisely because no one can follow him onto it. The same seclusion that lets a public figure get away from the crowds is what lets real work get done here.

A retreat is not only somewhere to rest. At its best it is somewhere that produces — and Sweetwater has already proven it can.

Who he is

A life measured in public, in five arenas.

This is the man who meets you at the fire. Terry L. Fossum has reached the top in direct sales, in United States Air Force leadership, in authorship, on network television, and in expedition. Same man, same set of ideas he now teaches, which is why the people he works with come back down this mountain different.

Early life

Terry L. Fossum was born in Mission, Texas, and raised in McAllen, in a border-region metro area repeatedly ranked among the poorest in the United States, surrounded by gangs and drugs. At fourteen he walked into something a theft ring did not want a witness to and was confronted at gunpoint in his own back alley. He talked his way out unharmed. During his high-school years his father was killed. A neighbor told the family afterward that not one of the Fossum boys would grow up to be anything. He has spent the rest of his life answering that line.

Texas A&M

He graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and served in the Corps of Cadets, where he was appointed the first-ever Honor Guard Commander, a Cadet Major position created specifically for him.

The Air Force

Commissioned after graduation, Terry served as Adjutant of the 325th Bombardment Squadron and then as Executive Officer of the 92d Operations Group at Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington: an entire Group of nuclear-armed B-52 bombers, during the Cold War and Gulf War I. He held that position as a Captain.

His recognitions from that service: Officer of the Year, Fairchild Air Force Base. Humanitarian of the Year for all of Strategic Air Command. Distinguished Graduate, Squadron Officers’ School. His call sign, given to him by his Squadron Commander, was Awesome.

Business

He also built a business in direct sales and reached the top fraction of 1% in the world, a self-made millionaire. He has led at both ends of the leadership spectrum: total authority over a nuclear bomber Group, and no authority at all over a global, all-volunteer force of independent people who were free to quit any day. The methods that worked in both are what he teaches.

Today he delivers two signature keynotes: Never Miss a Goal Again, built on his Oxcart Technique, for sales-driven organizations; and Throw Away the Box, for leaders and associations facing reinvention. He has guest lectured on this material at Texas A&M’s MBA program.

Books

He has published four books under his own house, Raidho Publishing. The Oxcart Technique: Blueprint for Personal Success reached #1 on the Wall Street Journal, Amazon and Barnes & Noble lists and was a USA Today bestseller; Never Miss a Goal Again is its second edition. Throw Away the Box and the award-winning The S.I.M.P.L.E. Guide to Public Speaking followed. The realtor who first showed him this mountain asked whether he could write his next book here. He wrote the #1 bestseller.

Expedition

He has hunted caribou with Inuit guides above the Arctic Circle, survived in the Amazon jungle, tracked silverback gorillas in the highlands of Rwanda, trekked Death Valley solo, and run subzero solo snowshoe expeditions in the Cascade Range. He holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. And he built Sweetwater: an off-grid mountaintop in Montana, with a saloon and boarding house he raised with his own hands.

Giving back

At home

Terry lives in Spokane Valley, Washington, with his wife. He has three stepsons, whom he calls his greatest achievement. His brother, Mike Fossum, is a NASA astronaut and former Commander of the International Space Station.

His ranch, his guests

It is his ranch, and you are his guest.

Sweetwater is not a business. Terry built Sweetwater with his own hands, and those of his friend, and kept it small on purpose. He brings people up here for one reason, in his words: growth often begins where certainty ends. The water in the ranch’s brand flows through the opening in the circle, bringing life back after a hard stretch. That is what a few days on this mountain do for the people he works with. They set the noise down, they get their drive back, and they go down the mountain with a plan for the success they came for, and the life around it. Leaders and speakers who work with Terry bring their own people up the mountain as his guests, and those people grow here. That is the deal, and it is a good one.
